Obituary of Joseph M Cassatly
Joseph M. Cassatly, 95, of Wayne, formerly of Jupiter, Florida, passed away on October 25, 2017. Joseph was born in Paterson on July 11, 1922 to the late Mikhail and Louise (Baram) Cassatly. Because his two older brothers were already serving in WWI, he could not be drafted into the United States Army. In order to serve his country, Joseph forged his parent's signatures to enlist. He then became a Master Sergeant who drove a Ward LeFranc truck to tow and service artillery equipment. He proudly served in the Army from 1943 to 1946.
Joseph later became the owner and operator of The Basket Shoppe in Wayne, NJ and Harry Food Service in Paterson for over 35 years until he retired at 65 years old. He was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Little Falls, St. Ignatius Antiochian Orthodox Church in Florida, NY and St. Mary's Church in West Palm Beach, Florida. Joseph was an avid golfer and enjoyed his membership at North Jersey Country Club in Wayne for over 45 years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing hand ball as well as being a volunteer at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida for 25 years.
Joseph was the beloved husband of Joyce (nee Nahass) for 70 years; the cherished father of Joyce Serventi and her late husband George, Karen Braccini and her husband Rick, and Michael Cassatly and his wife Stephanie; the adored grandfather of George, Alicia, Kara, Cheryl, Pamela, Susan, Sarah and Hannah and is also survived by his 14 precious great grandchildren. Joseph was the dear brother of Edward Cassatly and was predeceased by his brother George Cassatly and his sister Regina Franciose. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., Woodland Park, NJ. A funeral service will be offered on Saturday at 9am at St. Ignatius Antiochian Orthodox Church, 75 North Main Street, Florida, NY. Guests should meet at the church on Saturday morning. Burial will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
