Obituary of Joseph J Portella
Joseph J. Portella, 97, of Port Jervis, formerly of Paterson, NJ passed away on September 19, 2018. He was born in Paterson on October 2, 1920 to the late Gulio and Maria Rosario (Buccigrosso) Portella. Joseph proudly served in the US Army in the 26th Yankee Division Infantry during WWII from 1943-1945. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and was discharged as a disabled American Veteran. Joe was a member of the American Legion Post #0360 in Paterson.
Before retiring, he worked as a foreman for Railroad Construction in Paterson, NJ. He was also a former parishioner of Our Lady of Pompei Church in Paterson where he was also a member of the Seniors group.
Joseph was the beloved husband of Angela (Peloso) Portella; the cherished father of Joanne Marino and her husband Richard, Paul Portella and his wife Pauline, Janet Fornaro and her husband Claudio and Joseph Portella and his wife Rosemary; the adored grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Joseph is also survived by his brother Albert Portella and his sister Edie Gansereit as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Olga Agnes.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., Woodland Park. A funeral Mass will be offered on Monday at 11:00am at Our Lady of Pompei Church, 70 Murray Ave., Paterson, NJ. Entombment will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa.
