Obituary of Elena Matarazzo

Elena Matarazzo (nee Piemotese) born October 8, 1925 in Fuscaldo Marina, Calabria, Italy to the late Gennaro & Luigina (Leta) Piemontese. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 5, 2019.

After coming to the United States in 1956, she resided in Paterson, NJ, where she was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. She established roots for her family there, working at a family owned luncheonette and later went on to serve the kids in the cafeteria of St. Therese School. She later moved to Toms River, NJ and for the last 18 years residing in Columbus, NJ, where she was a parishioner of Mary Mother of the Church in Bordentown, NJ. Her hobbies included, gardening, sewing, cooking, puzzles and spending time with family.

She was the beloved wife of 51 years to the late Virgilio Matarazzo. She is the cherished and loved mother to three children, Eleonora Wilson and her husband Michael, Carmine Matarazzo and his late wife Cheryl, and Gina Wood and her husband Pete; The loved Nonna to her grandchildren, Michael Wilson and his wife Jessica, Timothy Wilson and his wife Kelly, Ashley Wood and Anthony Matarazzo; and the most loved “Big” Nonna to her great-grandchildren, Emma, Michael, Lyla and Joseph. 

Elena was the dear sister of Stefano Piemontese, Francesco Piemontese, Gino Piemontese and Carmela Matarazzo and the late Mario Piemontese and Giusepina Plastina. She is also survived by her sister in law Esterina Fondanarosa nee Matarazzo and many nieces and nephews in both the Unites States and Italy. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 9th from 4-8pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., Woodland Park, NJ. A funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, July 10th at 10:00am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 308 6th Ave., Paterson. Guests may meet at Santangelo Funeral Home at 9:00am. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa.
