Obituary of David Lyons
David Lyons, 97, of Woodland Park, passed away on February 24, 2020. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on February 10, 1923 to the late David and Nelly Lyons. He moved to Kearny, NJ in 1926 and attended St. Stephen and Kearny High School. David then moved to Woodland Park in 1957.
David proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a member of the US Navy Cruiser Association and served on the USS Quincy in the Atlanic, Mediterranean and Pacific, providing passage to President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference. He later became a proud member of the American Legion Post #227 in Totowa.
Before retiring, David worked for Continental Electric in Newark for 8 years and Public Service Electric in Clifton for 32 years before retiring in 1980.
David was a devoted volunteer fireman in the West Paterson Co. #2 Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief for 6 years and earned membership in the NJ Exempt Fireman's Association.
David was the cherished father of Patricia Gourley and Nancy Hellegers and her husband Kenneth. He was the treasured grandfather of Scott Gourley and his wife Karen, Kelly Snell and her husband Matt, Dana Mikolajczyk and her husband Andrew and Michael Hellegers and the great grandfather of Alex, Bryan, Drew, Catherine, Vanessa, Tricia, Gavin and Amelia. He was the dear brother of Helen Ferguson.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 26th from 4-8pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., Woodland Park. A funeral Mass will be offered on Thurs., Feb. 27th at 9:00am at St. Bonaventure Church, 174 Ramsey St., Paterson. Entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
