Muriel (Mickey) Brady-Licker posted a condolence
Monday, August 29, 2011
IT WAS BY SHEER ACCIDENT THAT MY HUSBAND BOB LICKER AND I,WHILE ON THE NET, LEARNED OF BILLY'S PASSING. WHAT A SHOCK SINCE MY BROTHER LEO BRADY HAD JUST PASSED ON JUNE 20.
IT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT TO SAY THAT THE BRADY AND DE STEFANO FAMILIES OF WEST PATERSON WERE CLOSE BUT GROWING UP AT A WONDERFUL TIME IN WEST PATERSON MADE FOR CLOSE FRIENDS.
BILLY AND I ATTENDED WEST PATERSON SCHOOLS 1 AND 4 TOGETHER. WE GRADUATED 8TH GRADE TOGETHER AND WENT ON TO PV. WE GRADUATED PV TOGETHER IN 1953. BILLY WAS A BIG PART OF MY LIFE GROWING UP. HE WAS JUST LIKE ANOTHER BROTHER TO ME. HE WOULD COME DOWN THE HILL FROM HIS HOUSE TO MINE ON MANY AN EVENING AND WE WOULD ANSWER OUR ASSIGED HISTORY QUESTIONS SPREAD OUT WITH OUR BOOKS ON MY LIVING ROOM FLOOR. DON'T THINK HE COULD EVERY REALLY UNDERSTAND MY LOVE OF HISTORY! I'LL NEVER FORGET ANSWERING THE DOOR ONE EVENING AND SEEING BILLY STANDING THERE IN HIS U.S. ARMY UNIFORM. I DIDN'T KNOW HE HAD JOINED! LIKE SO MANY OF THE WEST PATERSON "BOYS" HE HAD COME TO SEE MR. AND MRS. BRADY. WE SPOKE FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME BUT I KNEW IN THOSE FEW MOMENTS THAT BILLY KNEW WHERE HE WAS GOING IN LIFE AND THAT HE WOULD BE AS SPECIAL AS I ALWAYS FELT HE WAS.
THE LAST TIME I SAW BILLY WAS AT OUR 35 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. HE MAY HAVE KNOWN THAT I HAD MOVED TO CALIFORNIA BUT I KNOW HE WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT I HAD MET AND MARRIED BOB LICKER, PV CLASS OF '49, WHO AT ONE TIME, WAS A RIVERDALE PART TIME POLICEMAN. WE HAD A GREAT TIME TALKING AND REMINISCING.
BILLY GAVE ME ONE OF HIS BUSINESS CARDS AND I TOOK IT BACK TO CALIFORNIA AND PLACED IT IN OUR YEARBOOK WHERE IT REMAINS TO THIS DAY.
I HAVE NO DOUBTS THAT BILLY AND MY BROTHER LEO ARE TOGETHER SHARING STORIES OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS IN WEST PATERSON--SLEIGH RIDING DOWN THE HILL, PLAYING CARDS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL AND GETTING IN "BEFORE THE LIGHTS GO ON"!
JOHN AND RONNIE YOU HAVE MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES. YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. PLEASE PASS MY CONDOLENCES TO BILLY'S FAMILY

Momma, and the DeStefano family, I am so sorry for your loss. Billy was a wonderful man. Very few people you meet are as compassionate and kind as Billy. He was a true blessing to know. He was there for me and Chucky, and now I know Chuucky will be there for him as they meet again in Heaven. I pray for you to find comfort. He was a gentleman and a very kind man. God only takes the best.

Uncle Bill loved life, loved people, took real pleasure in the simple things in life and gave us that gift in return by just being in his company. He was always there to help and he would never turn his back on you and although he never carried a cell phone, if we needed him we knew what spots to search him out in!!!!
He was a great man and left behind many wonderful memories for each one of us.
Today I am very sad, as i am sure many people are, but also very grateful that he was always such a big part of my life and my family.....I will miss him greatly but will carry him in my heart always.
And tonight I will celebrate him as he would want....an aperitivo overlooking the sea at sunset and I know he will be right there with me saying "PATTIDUKE" with a big smile on his face.
I LOVE YOU UNCLE BILL!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always known Billy as a guy impossible not to like; easy to talk to, to joke with, and most of all, a man proudest of his family and friends. My father (Sam Yodice Sr) and Billy knew each other a long time! Growing up together "back in the day" in Paterson. On more than a few occasions, Billy would tell me of the sometimes mischievous events of their youth. He always looked back fondly remembering those conversations with Billy, many, many, many will miss him. To the DeStefano Family with my thoughts and prayers, I offer my sincerest condolences.

Bill was one of the "good guys" who called the shots as he saw them. We had many a laugh in PV. He had an impish smile and a sparkle in his eyes that let you know he knew what was going on. We had great fun in Mr. K's art classes, and I hope "Little Tex" gets to ride those heavenly horses to his heart's delight. May your family's grieving be gentle, Bill.

The Lobosco's moved to Riverdale in 1980 & Capt. D came to greet us. My Uncle, Capt. Bill Ohlmeyer, West Milford PD was on a call with him one night. Capt. D was schmoozing someone at the time and my Uncle said: boy, Capt. you are "Smooth". Hence, Capt. Smooth stuck with him forever. He was so much fun, always caring about each and every friend he had and was my favorite - always so dependable. Our sympathies to the DeStefano Family. I will truly miss him. Raising three daughters is Riverdale, we always knew Billy was there to keep an eye out for them (as if they were his own) Never without a smile, a compliment and a hug, we were always happier after seeing him around town. Even after retiring from the Riverdale PD he made sure to stop by at the street fair or the luncheonette and we were always thrilled to see him. We will remember him always and smile every time we speak of him, thank you for sharing this wonderful man with so many people, we were lucky to have him in our lives.

As night's darkness is followed by dawn, sorrow is followed by comfort. Please know that your Retired Police & Fire Local #5 Passaic County family extends its deepest, most heartfelt sympathies on the death of your beloved Husband.
There is not one among us who has not suffered the trauma of a death sometime in our lives. Most have found comfort in paying the ultimate homage to a person who was dear to them. This is to take the characteristics we cherished the most in the departed loved one and pass them on for the benefit of others. If there is anything we can do to lessen your pain, remember we are here to help.

A family man, a loving husband, a community leader, dedicated police officer, investigator, and a dear friend.
As a client he only wanted the right result; as a a friend he helped us get Tom Kean elected Governor; and, his service to the Borough of WEST PATERSON, was long, legendary, and loyal. There was a reason his nickname was "Smooth" without anger or threat, he got things done and all sides respected how he did it. They truly don't make'm like Billy any more--with deep sympathies and sorrow, Jack and Susie Carbone
