Obituary of Herman "Herc" Saporito

Herman "Herc" Saporito, of Upper Montclair, passed away April 1, 2009 in his home after a long illness. He proudly defended his country in WWII as a member of the US Army receiving a Bronze Star and other commendations. He was the sole owner and operator of Umbriagos Liquor Store for over 30 years until his retirement in 1978. Herc was known to his friends as an avid tennis player and international skier. He always enjoyed his life to the fullest, whether sitting in the sun, riding waves at the shore, traveling throughout the world or just spending time at home with his family and animals. Upon retiring he also gave his time as a volunteer in his community, most prominently with Montclair Community Hospital and North Jersey Developmental Center. Loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Georgette "Jean" Saporita, daughter Pamela, son Richard and his wife Maureen, daughter Marybeth and her partner Ray and grandchildren Ian and Miranda, niece Val and nephew Steven. Predeceased by son, Jay and grandchildren Samantha and Spencer. Herc was a generous and loving man and trusted friend whose charm put a smile on the faces of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed. Visiting will be Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., Woodland Park, NJ. The funeral mass will be Saturday, 10:15am at St. Bonaventure Church, 174 Ramsey Street, Paterson. Guests may arrive at funeral home at 9:15am. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa.
