To the Salomone Family,
My sincerest and deepest sympathy to your family. My Dad and Mom along with Paul and fellow "new" firefighters like Henny Henderson, Frank Copa, the Diana Brothers, Mr. Bigger, Vic Puznieski and Charlie who always drove the truck etc. were the originators of the "Ridge Runners" Rifle Camp Fire Company #3. Looking back through photos of the Department, when the firehouse was being built brings warm memories of the best camaraderie and pride as they freely offered to serve the community. I remember Paul with the kindest of memories, always helping, smiling and being the ever so diligent professional making sure things were done right. After my Dad Stanley's death he continued to show support for my Mom Stella whenever she needed it. I will always be grateful for his kind, generous nature and willing concern for others.
Sincerely,
Carole Machuszek

I had the honor of knowing Chief Paul Salomone Sr for the past 40 years going back to my own late teens when I was just getting involved with the Butler Fire Department. My late grandfather and late uncle both knew Pauly and thought very highly of him going back to the 1940's. He served as an Executive Board member of the 5 county North Jersey Volunteer Firemen's Association for so many decades that nobody can remember when he was actually appointed but it was at least from the early 1960's. In 1980 I became the NJVFA secretary so I really got to know him good not only at our monthly general meetings but also at the officers meetings each month. We will all miss Pauly's stories and jokes but he was very serous about firefighting so much that when he didn't like something that was happening especially on legislative matters involving the fire service he spoke his mind with everyone at the meetings standing to applaud him.
Last night the service of the West Paterson Fire Department and the West Paterson Exempt Firemen's Association was truly one of the finest tributes that I have ever witnessed. There were several hundred firefighters not only from West Paterson but also from many other communities with some travelling at least 50 miles to attend. Part of that service was the sounding of chief's call from a fire alarm box that was connected to an firehouse gong as Paul had maintained municipal fire alarm systems for his town and others too.
I will think of Paul every time I see or hear names such as Rifle Camp, West Paterson, and most of all the fleet of trucks letter Salomone Brothers.

To the Salomone Family,
He was a special breed of man that unless you are a wife, son, or daughter of a firemen you can understand them. They were born to love a job that not too many people would do. They would get up in the middle of the night and run to get to that truck so they could help people in need and then get up in the morning and go do an 8 hour job and not complain. I would like to thank the Salomone Family for all the years he dedicated himself to the town of West Paterson. May his soul rest in peace.

Chief, we had many good times, good conversations and probably agreed to disagree just as often. Through it all we both shared a common love for firefighting and a common desire to have Company 3 be the best it could be. For your dedication and countless hours to your labor of love, I admire you, and thank you. You may have answered your last alarm here in West Paterson, but I know if there are firestations in heaven, you will definately be the first one on the rig. If not, I know you will be watching over us here and if possible...you will send down a little of your knowledge and wisdom. Rest well my friend, you definately deserve it. To Dorthy, Joe, Paul Jr and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this sorrowful time. Paul will truely be missed by many.

First, I am personally very sorry to learn of Chief Paul Salomone Sr.'s passing, as I have personally known him since the early 1970's and my now deceased family members considered him to the be their friend going back at least 70 years. He was one of the giants of the North Jersey Volunteer Firemen's Association serving as an Executive Board member for many decades. Chief Salomone will always be remembered for the countless good things that he achieved, always having time to discuss the events of the day and of the past with anyone who came to him.
Second, as secretary of the NJVFA I would like to pass on the organization's condolences.

Chief you will be missed. Many may be elected chief but few earn it and Chief you have set the standard for others to follow. After moving out of WP my son was born and my wife Beth and I brought him to the Co 3 Fire Expo for the 1st time and Chief came over, kissed my son on the forehead and slapped me on the back and said "good job". Thank you Chief, God Bless you and your family. Please tell Father John we said hi!

I remember when I became a member of the West Paterson Fire Dept. and met the Chief. One of my first days at the firehouse he had me working on one of his "PROJECTS" with him and learned my lesson very quick to figure out what he was doing first and then help.
After being on the department for sometime now and truly getting to know the Chief, I look back at the conversations we've had and how he taught me so many things about life in general and about firefighting. He always was giving advise and caring about the guys that were around him. I will always remember those conversations and the advise he gave me and use it everyday! Chief you will be missed and will always be loved!!

Growing up in a 2 family house with you was very memorable. How many kids can say they had bells going off in their house when the fire alarm in town went off and the lights went on to light your way? You were a genius but scared me when you'd lick your finger and stick it in a socket! I love you & will miss you. Rest in Peace Uncle Paul!

At first the Chief didn't know who I was. Then after a while he was concerned what would happen to me in my old age . He was always trying to figure out how to get me into the firemans home when I got old because he said " He knew I was never gonna get married " :). Gonna miss ya Pauly. MY prayers to for you and your family.
